If you're interested in starting a career in healthcare, phlebotomy can be a great place to begin. Phlebotomists play an important role in the healthcare team by collecting blood specimens that are used for laboratory testing and patient care.

At Phlebotomy Geek Vocational Training in Olympia Fields, Illinois, our goal is to help students learn the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to enter the field with confidence.

What Does a Phlebotomist Do?

A phlebotomist does much more than draw blood. Phlebotomists must correctly identify patients, select appropriate equipment, collect specimens safely, label tubes accurately, follow infection-control procedures, and communicate professionally with patients.

Accuracy and patient safety are important parts of every blood collection.

What Will You Learn in Phlebotomy Training?

A quality phlebotomy training program should combine classroom instruction with hands-on practice.

Students may learn:

  • Venipuncture and capillary collection

  • Anatomy and common blood collection sites

  • Order of draw

  • Blood collection tubes and additives

  • Patient identification

  • Infection control and standard precautions

  • Specimen labeling, handling, and processing

  • Patient communication

  • Sharps and bloodborne-pathogen safety

Why Hands-On Training Matters

Phlebotomy is a skill that requires practice. Reading about venipuncture is very different from actually learning how to locate a vein, position the patient, select equipment, perform a blood draw, and properly handle the specimen.

Hands-on practice allows students to develop their technique while learning the proper sequence for safe blood collection.

Preparing for National Certification

Completing a phlebotomy training program and earning a national certification are separate accomplishments.

At Phlebotomy Geek, our phlebotomy program helps prepare students for the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination while developing the practical skills they will need in the field.

Students should always review current certification eligibility requirements before registering for an examination.
